남서울미술관은 유동 인구가 많은 사당역 6번 출구 인근에 위치해 있다. 그러나 사당역은 환승역이라는 특성상 대부분의 이용자가 머무르기보다는 다른 지역으로 이동하거나 약속 장소로 잠시 들르는 경우가 많아, 지리적 여건상 다른 SeMA 분관에 비해 방문객 수가 상대적으로 적은 편이다.

더불어 현 미술관은 도시 맥락과의 연계성이 부족하고, 실내 공간 안에서만 전시를 관람할 수 있는 폐쇄적인 구조로 인해 자발적인 유입을 유도하기 어렵다. 목적성을 지닌 방문자가 아니라면, 미술관은 일상적인 동선에서 벗어난, ‘들어가야만 만날 수 있는’ 닫힌 공간으로 인식되기 쉽다.

이에 본 프로젝트는 미술관을 ‘열린 동선 속에서 경험되는 공간’으로 재구성하고자 하였다. 단순히 실내에 머무는 전시가 아닌, 보행자가 주변을 산책하듯 이동하는 과정 속에서 자연스럽게 예술을 마주할 수 있도록 동선을 설계하였다. 이 전략은 우연한 시각적 노출과 열린 흐름을 통해 외부인의 호기심을 자극하고, 전시에 대한 심리적 장벽을 낮추는 것을 목표로 하였다.

방문객은 외부에서 내부로 연결되는 유기적인 동선을 따라 이동하며, 다양한 시야의 높낮이를 통해 전시를 다층적으로 경험하게 된다. 이를 실현하기 위해 저층부를 과감히 개방하여 가시성과 접근성을 확보하고, 외부 공간 곳곳에 체험형 프로그램과 전시 요소를 배치함으로써 미술관의 경계를 도시 공간으로 확장시켰다.

해당 리모델링 프로젝트인 만큼 기존 건물의 구조는 존중하되, 그 안에 새로운 흐름과 열린 전시 개념이 자연스럽게 스며들도록 계획하였다.

The Namseoul Museum of Art is located near Exit 6 of Sadang Station, which has a large floating population. However, due to the nature of Sadang Station as a transfer station, most users often move to other areas or stop by at appointments rather than stay, so the number of visitors is relatively small compared to other SeMA branches due to geographical conditions.

In addition, the current art museum lacks connection with the urban context, and it is difficult to induce voluntary inflow due to the closed structure in which exhibitions can only be viewed in indoor spaces. Unless you are a visitor with a purpose, it is easy to recognize an art museum as a closed space that can only be met ‘if you enter’ that is out of the ordinary movement.

Accordingly, this project attempted to reconstruct the art museum as a ‘space experienced in an open flow path’. It is not just an exhibition staying indoors, but a movement path is designed so that pedestrians can naturally face art in the process of moving as if taking a walk around. This strategy aimed to stimulate the curiosity of outsiders through accidental visual exposure and open flow and to lower psychological barriers to exhibition.

Visitors move along an organic line connected from the outside to the inside, and experience the exhibition in multiple layers through the height of various fields of view. To realize this, the lower floors were boldly opened to secure visibility and accessibility, and the boundaries of the museum were expanded into urban spaces by arranging experiential programs and exhibition elements throughout the outer space.

As it is a remodeling project, the structure of the existing building is respected, but a new flow and open exhibition concept are naturally permeated into it.

Concept

“INSIDE OUT: “내부에 머무는 전시에서 산책로를 따라 흐르는 경험으로”

본 프로젝트는 폐쇄적인 전시 구조로 인해 도시와 단절되어 있던 남서울미술관을, ‘열린 동선 속에서 경험되는 미술관’으로 재구성하는 리모델링 전략이다. 기존 미술관은 실내 공간에 전시가 집중되어 있어, 목적 없이 방문한 이들에게는 진입 장벽이 높고, 주변 도시 맥락과도 단절된 채 기능해왔다.

이에 따라 본 프로젝트는 전시의 경험을 실내에서 외부까지 확장시키고자 한다. 보행자는 미술관 주변을 산책하듯 이동하며, 자연스럽게 전시를 마주하고 관람하게 되는 흐름 속에 놓인다. 이는 도시 속 우연한 시선과 동선의 만남을 통해 방문자에게 호기심을 불러일으키고, 더 많은 유입을 유도하는 전략이다. 저층부의 개방을 통해 가시성과 접근성을 확보하고, 외부 공간에 체험형 전시와 프로그램을 유기적으로 배치하여 미술관의 경계를 도시로 스며들게 한다.

“INSIDE OUT: From an exhibition that stays inside to an experience that flows along the trail”

This project is a remodeling strategy to reorganize the Namseoul Museum of Art, which was cut off from the city due to its closed exhibition structure, into an “art museum experienced in open traffic.” Existing art galleries have been functioning with high barriers to entry for those who visit without purpose, and disconnected from the surrounding urban context, as exhibitions are concentrated in indoor spaces.

Accordingly, this project aims to expand the exhibition experience from indoors to outside. Pedestrians move around the art museum as if they were taking a walk, and are naturally in a flow of facing and viewing the exhibition. This is a strategy to arouse curiosity in visitors and induce more inflow through the encounter of accidental gaze and movement in the city. Visibility and accessibility are secured through the opening of the lower layer, and experiential exhibitions and programs are organically arranged in the external space to allow the boundaries of the art museum to permeate the city.
